CPR, Ultrasounds, & Stop the Bleed: Health Night at UCEM

Earlier this spring, the University of Chicago’s STEM Education department visited our Community Nights to teach families about scientific experiments and ideas they can explore at home. Last Thursday, we continued our partnership with the University of Chicago, this time with the Emergency Medicine (UCEM) department.

TTP families attended the first Community Day last spring at the UCEM. So families were invited back for Health Night to learn about emergency medicine practices. This included life-saving first-aid tips like CPR and and Stop the Bleed of fatal wounds. Families also got to interact with and ask questions of the medical technology residents and attendants.

Community Medical Practices

After a family dinner, parents and students gathered to learn a basic CPR lesson. We discussed the basics of the circulatory system and what happens in the body when the heart is pumping blood. After this, families split off into two groups. Each group learned about ultrasound technology discovers fluid build up where it shouldn’t be. Students even had the chance to practice using the ultrasound machine. Families also learned about hemorrhage control (Stop the Bleed) and basic tourniquet application.

The night ended with a panel and Q&A with current medical residents and students. They answered questions about what inspired them to join the medical field as well as other experiences, inspirations, and challenges within the profession. Families were especially excited about being connected to programs that prepare students for the medical field.

Thank you to all the UCEM students and residents who participated. An extra thank you to TTP board member and UCEM resident (and imminent attending physician) Garth Walker for organizing a fun and informative meeting for our families.
