Turning the Page 2018 At A Glance

The Third Chapter

Wow! 2018 was truly an incredible year for Turning the Page. After twenty years as an organization, we have begun our “third chapter.” Our work over the last two decades shows that with strong support, parents, regardless of education or income, can be valued partners in improving their children’s education. Six principles, the bedrock of our programs, have enabled thousands of parents to improve the opportunity for their children’s academic success.

Because of these principles, TTP has achieved several significant outcomes:

  • Outside evaluations found that children of parents participating in DC TTP programs received higher reading and literacy test scores than their peers. A 2018 outside evaluation of our Chicago platform indicated that after our second year of operations, students also outperformed their peers.
  • We have added more than 110,000 books to home libraries and engaged over 6,500 families
  • Workshops with local partner institutions have enabled parents to use books at home effectively and to integrate the arts, math, and sciences into their children’s learning experience.
  • 42% of TTP parents read daily at home with their children; 32% read to their children four to six days per week.
  • Parent Leaders have both formed and strengthened local Parent Teacher Associations (PTA) and Parent Action Councils (PAC); sustained cross-generational service projects; implemented school resource and science fairs; and advocated for improved after-school programming and bullying prevention. In the District, Parent Leaders have served in the Chancellor’s Parent Cabinet and the Mayor’s Bullying Prevention Task Force.

2018 Highlights

This year, we continued our cornerstone programming of Community Nights, Parent Leadership Conferences, and Summer Learning field trips. Our Carpe Librum bookstores continue to gain attention from major press outlets. We also hosted our 20th Anniversary Gala in Washington D.C. and made a video featuring interviews with past and former TTP staff, teachers, and parents.

Check out the rest of our highlights from our programming throughout the year below. Thank you again to everyone who has supported or participated in our work along the way!
