Get Back In The Loop With Chicago Public Libraries

Chicago has an extensive public library system, and is a great resource for parents and students alike. Chicago Public Libraries (CPL) offer various services and resources to all members holding a library card, in good standing. There’s no age limit for library cards and anyone is able to get one by just going into their nearest branch and speaking to your librarian. With 80 libraries scattered throughout Chicago and 2 regional libraries open every day of the week, there’s more than likely a library right in your very neighborhood and resources in your own backyard.

In Chicago’s North Lawndale community, our partner libraries are the Douglass Branch located at 3353 West 13th Street and the Legler Branch located at 115 South Pulaski Road. During a recent meeting with Douglass’ Children’s Librarian, she shared resources and initiatives being put into motion this school year.

Beginning September 14, CPL will begin hosting “Teacher in the Library” with free homework help from a Chicago Public Schools teacher at every branch. If you can’t go to the library, there is an online alternative called BrainFuse which is a 24-hour, virtual homework site. BrainFuse offers live tutoring from 2 PM. – 11 PM., 7 days a week that assists students from kindergarten to college in various subjects. BrainFuse also offers a writing lab and testing assistance.

CPL is also piloting a new service called “Internet to Go” that allows families to borrow Wi-Fi hotspots for their home from selected CPL branches (Brighton Park, Douglass, and Greater Grand Crossing). The hotspots are checked out for three weeks and may be renewed, if no one else has placed it on hold.

The Children’s Librarians want parents to remember the importance of reading with your child and to take advantage of the libraries. Libraries are a source for quiet, quality time that you can spend with your family.
