A signature program
Turning the Page Community Nights are opportunities for parents to develop skills and learn new strategies to help their children succeed in school. Research shows that parents who support literacy development at home have more successful children, so this year’s Community Nights explored different ways parents can help their children become more fluent readers at home.
Our monthly Community Night workshops empower parents to provide creative learning experiences by using books as vehicles for discussing their child’s self-discovery and cultural exploration. Therefore, parents are given at-home learning tips to deepen their child’s understanding of the books they read.
Raising Readers at Home and School
Our first Community Night of the new school year focused on raising readers at home and school. Families explored the areas of literacy development and discussed strategies to support their student’s progress throughout the school year. In addition, parents practiced each skill by playing games like BAM! and a homemade version of Boggle.
Later in the workshop, parents and teachers explored ways to create an effective parent-teacher partnership, since that acts as a foundation to raising children who are motivated and ready to learn.

We love read-alouds!
Lastly, at every Community Night families read a book aloud and this workshop featured Ish by Peter H. Reynolds. The story follows Ramon, a creative spirit who learns that thinking “ish-ly” is far more wonderful than “getting everything just right”. His new way of looking at creativity inspired other interests like writing and poetry.
