Turning the Page fundamentally believes in a parent’s power to make real change for their children. So much of parents’ successes are behind closed doors and go unrecognized. In light of the new school year beginning with remote learning, we want to take a moment to celebrate the extraordinary parents that we work with in the Washington D.C. and Chicago communities.
Parent Name: Rosalie Gaines
City: Chicago, IL
School: Legacy Charter School
What has been your biggest challenge with at-home learning? How did you work through that? Are you still figuring it out?
The hardest part about everything has been keeping up with Legacy. At times I thought I was on top of things but then the devices were being given out at a certain time, and I was wrong and (former Turning the Page VISTA) Nancy corrected me. Nancy was also able to connect me to the principal. They need to make sure all the parents are up to date like you guys.
How are you feeling about transitioning back to in-school learning when the time comes?
I am actually pretty nervous about the future of schools. But I do know that Turning the Page won’t leave me stranded!
Give a shoutout! Tell me about the outside support you’ve received that has helped you with at home learning.
Nancy really helped me because I did not know the state of my life at one point so coming back and having to deal with the kids’ school was just not my biggest concern. Nancy really made it easy for me. She did a lot of the work of getting me updates for the school and I really appreciate that.
What has your family been doing for fun during physical distancing?
I work a lot but when I come back home I like to cook for my family and share a meal together. When the grandmother is watching them, they will play in the yard with the neighbor.
If you could have any animal in the world as a pet, what would you choose and why?
I would choose an owl because they can move their necks around and I want to check on my kids!
