We closed out our Summer Family Enrichment Program with our annual trip to the Anacostia River Watershed, where our families bonded as they traveled on a guided boat tour along the river. We learned about the wildlife unique to the river and current plans to restore the health of the water. We also learned about the history of this body of water that originally served as an essential part of daily life, allowing early settlers to transport goods and ideas amongst one another.
Over time, usage of the river has changed to serve a more recreational purpose and sustain the natural life that finds a home along the water—including bald eagles! Learn more about the Anacostia Watershed Society’s work and history of the river here.
Turning the Page families had a wonderful time observing the natural beauty of the river and its lively friends up close. Following the boat tour, parents took time to share their personal experiences with Turning the Page, reflecting on how, through our programming, they have been supported in helping their children academically. What a great way to end the summer!
