Turning the Page fundamentally believes in a parent’s power to make real change for their children. So much of parents’ successes are behind closed doors and go unrecognized. In light of everything happening right now, we want to take a moment to celebrate the extraordinary parents that we work with in the Washington D.C. and Chicago communities.
Parent Name: Dorian Thomas
City: Washington, DC
School: Turner Elementary
What is a success that you’ve had since starting at-home learning?
We have been able to stick to a consistent schedule of learning and have been using online resources to help. PBS Kids videos have been a good resource to keep her engaged while learning.
What is a challenge that you’ve had since starting at-home learning?
My main challenge is probably balancing out our schedules and making sure we are spending ample time focusing on every subject.
What is her favorite part of being at home right now?
Her favorite part would definitely be lunch, or just in general anytime we eat together! She also enjoys being able to take breaks and move or dance around while learning. Her favorite fun learning activity is watching videos of animals.
How are you feeling about transitioning back to in-school learning when the time comes?
I would definitely prefer her learning in person as she is still young and the school provides a good environment for her learning.
However, everything is so uncertain, and now it seems like going to school would be unsafe (because of coronavirus) both for the teachers and the students so it makes sense that at-home learning continues.
What has your family been doing for fun during physical distancing?
We have been playing games, going on walks, and watching movies.
What is something that you miss and can’t wait to get back to after quarantine?
We definitely miss visiting all the free sites in DC especially in the summer. We especially miss visiting the zoo, the museums, and the arboretum.
We’ll be spotlighting parents each week, so keep checking back for more! Looking for ways to support parents like Dorian?
