Turning the Page fundamentally believes in a parent’s power to make real change for their children. So much of parents’ successes are behind closed doors and go unrecognized. As we continue to navigate through an educational world impacted by COVID-19, TTP wants to celebrate the extraordinary parents that we work with in the Washington D.C. and Chicago communities.
Parent Name: Lakisha Williams-Looney

What is a success that you’ve had since starting at-home learning? What’s working for you?
One of my successes with at home learning is having a successful routine that works. I am an essential worker and have worked throughout COVID. So making sure my daughter was okay while I’m at work was a worry of mine. My daughter has learned how to work the computer successfully. Her being 6 years old, I was nervous, but she has excelled with technology. She knows her schedule, and asks for help when needed. I love her independence! Consistency works! The teacher has been awesome in maintaining consistency as well.
What has been your biggest challenge with at-home learning? How did you work through it? Are you still figuring it out?
At home learning has definitely taken away all my off days (my me time). I used to run errands while she was in school but now I make it work by waiting until the weekends. I don’t want her out so I just put my things on hold. I’m still figuring it out but have gotten used to just staying home until school is finished.
Are you doing hybrid, in-person or staying in remote learning for this next quarter? What are your thoughts and concerns regarding this decision?
My family decision was to stay in remote learning for this quarter and if given a choice, will continue until the end of the year. There are many factors that play a role in my decision. I just want the decreased class size to be considered an option when bringing kids back. Do we have the teachers to accommodate smaller class sizes?
What have been some challenges you and your student have faced this school year?
My student was unable to see and interact with her friends. She could not attend her extra activities such as gymnastics. She could not go to the places and the things we use to do as a family. As her mom, it was challenging because it almost felt like a punishment for her. I’m glad that the vaccine is available and that we can possibly get back to living life safely.
What are you most proud of that has happened this school year?
I am proud that my daughter has adapted to her new learning environment and has shown progress. I can tell that learning is still taking place.
What has your family been doing for fun during physical distancing?
For fun we have been doing more at home board games, which allows for more bonding with the kids. We’ve also incorporated movie nights, allowing one kid to choose the movie and have both of them help pop the popcorn. Then we enjoy the night!
How has Turning the Page helped you during at-home learning?
TTP has helped with providing books because we went through our stash at home. You’ve also helped by providing activities at home. For example, we participated in Author Visits and went under the sea and saw the sharks! Field trips from home are an awesome idea! Thank you TTP!
Any other outside support that has helped you with at-home learning?
My teacher, Ms. Siggers, always helps me find resources to help reinforce learning. I asked and she delivered. It’s nice to have a teacher to support you when needed.
JPA (Juvenile Protective Association) is our counseling support. My daughter was supported throughout the pandemic by Ms. Pranthana. Without her, I don’t know where we would be. She talked to her and played with her during the session.
Kellman also provided the parent circle. I am beyond blessed by joining the parent circle. It has been life changing. The circle allows me a space to express feelings and just pour my heart out if needed. It’s a place of no judgement and it feels safe! We have the opportunity to lead or to chill and listen. Nothing is forced upon you! I’m so grateful for the parent circle!
